Evolving Accessibility Widget

An accessibility menu for your website's visitors: larger text, readable fonts, contrast and color options, reduced motion, a stronger keyboard focus outline and read-aloud. Made and supported by ADA-Expert, Inc.

What visitors can adjust

Accessibility profiles

Each profile turns on a set of display adjustments, listed below with its limits. Visitors can turn on several profiles at once and change any adjustment one by one; the panel always shows what is on.

  • Blindness

For people with little or no vision who are not using a screen reader. Turns on Read Aloud (your browser's voice), Keyboard Navigation and Stop Animations. If you use a screen reader, keep using it: this menu does not change what it reads.

  • Motor Skills Disorders

Turns on Keyboard Navigation (a stronger focus outline and a list of page sections), Big Cursor and Stop Animations. It cannot add keyboard support to controls that only work with a mouse.

  • Color Blindness

Outlines links and headings so they do not depend on color, and raises color saturation, which can help some people tell hues apart. It cannot add labels to charts or color codes on the page.

  • Visually Impaired

Makes text 150% larger and bold, increases contrast, outlines links and headings, and enlarges the mouse pointer. Pages that do not reflow may need scrolling.

  • Epilepsy

Stops CSS animations and transitions, pauses videos that play on their own, and lowers color saturation. It cannot detect or remove flashing content in images, videos or embedded frames.

  • Learning

Switches to the OpenDyslexic font, which some readers prefer, adds space between letters, words and lines, outlines headings and turns on the Reading Guide. It cannot simplify the text itself.

  • Elder

Makes text 130% larger, adds space between lines, outlines links, enlarges the mouse pointer and stops animations. It cannot extend time limits or simplify forms on the page.

Navigation Adjustment

  • Screen Reader Adjustment

Read aloud with your browser's voice, for visitors who do not use a screen reader. A small player reads the selected text, or the page from the paragraph you click, sentence by sentence, and highlights the sentence being read; keyboard users press Alt+Shift+R to read from the element that has focus. It reads visible text only, uses only the voices installed on the device, and never starts on its own.

  • Keyboard Navigation

A stronger, two-color focus outline, a Skip to main content link and a Page sections list of the page's landmarks and headings. It lists what the website exposes; it cannot add headings or fix the order of the page.

Content Adjustments

  • Font size: From 80% to 200%, in steps of 10%.
  • Highlight Title: Outlines the page's headings.
  • Highlight Links: Outlines and underlines links.
  • Dyslexia Font: Switches text to the OpenDyslexic font, offered as a preference.
  • Letter Spacing: Adds the letter and word spacing of WCAG 1.4.12.
  • Line Height: Sets line height to twice the font size.
  • Font Weight: Makes text bold.

Color Adjustments

  • Dark Contrast: Light text on a dark background.
  • Light Contrast: Dark text on a light background.
  • High Contrast: Raises the contrast of the whole page.
  • High Saturation: Makes colors stronger.
  • Low Saturation: Makes colors softer.
  • Monochrome: Shows the page in grayscale.

Tools

  • Reading Guide: Dims the page above and below the line you are reading.
  • Stop Animations: Stops CSS animations and transitions and pauses videos that play on their own.
  • Big Cursor: Shows a large mouse pointer.

Panel controls

  • Language: the whole panel is in English and Spanish. In 50 more languages only the 24 labels it shares with our own website's menu (the names of the adjustments and panel sections, Close and Language) are translated; the rest of the panel stays in English.
  • Larger panel, Move panel to the other side, and Hide the button for the rest of the visit (Alt+Shift+A brings it back).
  • Turn Off resets every adjustment at once.
  • Accessibility Statement and Send Feedback link to your own statement and contact channel, never to ours.

What it does not do

The Evolving Accessibility Widget lets visitors adjust how your website looks and reads: text size, spacing, contrast, color, motion, focus outline and read-aloud. It does not change your website's code and does not, by itself, make a website conform to WCAG or meet the ADA. Conformance comes from an accessibility audit and fixes to the code, which ADA-Expert also provides.

  • It is not a screen reader and does not change what screen readers announce.
  • It does not add alternative text, ARIA attributes, labels or headings to your pages, and does not change their reading order.
  • It cannot fix keyboard traps, missing form labels, images of text or content inside embedded frames.

Real conformance comes from an audit and code fixes:

Why we do not promise compliance

An accessibility menu changes how a page is displayed for the visitor who uses it. Most WCAG failures, such as missing text alternatives, unlabeled form fields, keyboard traps or a confusing structure, live in the website's code and can only be fixed there.

In January 2025 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission charged a company that sold an automated accessibility overlay with claiming, without evidence, that its tool could make any website conform to WCAG. Under the final order of April 2025, the company had to pay $1 million.

That is why we describe exactly what each feature does, state its limits, and recommend an accessibility audit and remediation for conformance.

Built to be accessible itself

  • The panel is a modal dialog with labeled buttons and switches, a visible focus outline and full keyboard operation: Tab, Enter, Space and Escape, and Alt+Shift+A to open it.
  • Controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels and the panel respects reduced-motion settings. It is tested at a 320-pixel width (400% zoom) and with forced colors (Windows contrast themes).
  • Panel in English and Spanish. The 24 adjustment and section names it shares with our own website's menu are also translated into 50 more languages; more complete translations are in progress.
  • No personal data: no cookies, no analytics and no requests to other companies. The script loads only from ADA-Expert's server, whose hosting provider keeps standard access logs (IP address, browser type and the website's address) for a limited time for security and operations; we do not use them to track or profile visitors.
  • A small script that loads without blocking your pages and works under a strict Content Security Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Will this make my website ADA compliant?

No. The widget helps visitors adjust the display; it does not by itself make a website conform to WCAG or meet the ADA. Conformance comes from an accessibility audit and fixes to the code, and ADA-Expert offers both.

Website accessibility services

Does it work with screen readers?

The panel is built to work with screen readers: it is a labeled dialog with standard buttons and switches, checked with automated accessibility tests. The widget does not change what a screen reader reads on your pages. Its Screen Reader Adjustment is a read-aloud feature for visitors who do not use a screen reader; if someone who uses one presses Play, both will speak.

Do you collect data about visitors?

The widget collects no personal data: it sets no cookies, sends no analytics and makes no requests to other companies, and visitors' choices stay in their own browser, for your website only. To load the script, the visitor's browser connects to ADA-Expert's server; like any web server, our hosting provider keeps standard access logs (IP address, browser type and the website's address) for a limited time for security and operations. We do not use them to track or profile visitors.

Can visitors turn it off or hide it?

Yes. Turn Off resets every adjustment. Hide removes the button for the rest of the visit, while the visitor's adjustments keep working; Alt+Shift+A, or an Accessibility settings link in your footer, brings it back.

What should my accessibility statement say?

It should describe your website's real conformance status, based on an assessment, and tell people how to reach you about barriers. The widget does not change that status. Our free generator helps you write one.

Can I cancel?

Yes. Plans renew until you cancel. Contact us with your order number and website address; a monthly plan ends at the end of the paid month. We never ask for passwords.

Tax information

Small businesses that meet the IRS limits may be able to claim the Disabled Access Credit (IRS Form 8826) for some accessibility expenses. Whether an expense qualifies depends on your situation: ask your tax professional. ADA-Expert, Inc. does not give tax advice.
